Key topics to be addressed in the revised Master Plan include revised land classifications, new natural and recreational resource management objectives, recreation facility needs and special topics such as invasive species management and threatened and endangered species habitat. The Plan and the land classifications are in need of revision to address changes in regional land use, population, outdoor recreation trends and USACE management policy. The current Master Plan for Somerville Lake was last updated in 1971, which was a supplement to the 1963 Master Plan. Situated at 9- to 11-foot depths when the lake is full, the artificial structures last longer than natural brush, shed fishing hooks better than wood, and will look like small pine trees on a depth finder. The Master Plan is the strategic land use management document that guides the comprehensive management and development of all recreational, natural, and cultural resources of the lake throughout the life of the water resources project. Working with local partners, TPWD has installed commercial fish attracting structure in this reservoir. The lake, located on the Yegua Creek River in the Brazos River Basin, is also managed for public recreation and environmental stewardship, including fish and wildlife conservation.
Somerville Lake is currently a multipurpose water resources project operated by USACE that includes balancing the needs of the surrounding population, visitors, and the ecological system. Somerville Lake was authorized by the Flood Control Act approved 03 September 1954 (Public Law (PL) 83-780) for the purpose of flood control, water conservation storage, recreation, and fish and wildlife enhancement. The Plan guides the stewardship of natural and cultural resources and the provision of outdoor recreation facilities with opportunities to ensure sustainability of federal land associated with Somerville Lake. Living in Somerville offers residents a suburban rural mix feel. The Master Plan is intended to serve as a comprehensive land and recreational management plan with a life span of 25 years. Somerville is a town in Texas with a population of 1,226. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Fort Worth District, is revising the Somerville Lake Master Plan. Boating, water-skiing, swimming, fishing for large- and smallmouth bass, walleye, panfish, and catfish, (trout are stocked below the dam in the spring and fall) scuba diving, picnicking, hunting, and biking are the favorite activities enjoyed by nearly one million visitors annually.
